Our Hokie Hero this week is Second Lieutenant Thomas Lenz. Tom is currently stationed at Forward Operating Base Caldwell in Diyala, Iraq as a member of Alpha Troop, First of the 14th Cavalry Regiment, United States Army--he notes that he feels connected by being at FOB Caldwell since the first student at Virginia Tech in 1872 was named Addison Caldwell. Tom is from Culpeper, Virginia and this is his first combat deployment. Lieutenant Lenz is a Class of 2008 graduate of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. Tom sends love and wishes of good hope to everyone back home. Ut Prosim

Our Hokie Hero this week is First Lieutenant Jordan Martinelli. Jordan is currently stationed at Contingency Operating Station GarryOwen, Al Amarah Iraq, as a member of the 1st Armored Division, United States Army. Jordan is currently serving as a platoon leader conducting a joint partnership with Iraqi Security Forces in an advise and assist capacity. Jordan is from Irwin, PA and this is his first combat deployment. Lieutenant Martinelli is a Class of 2007 graduate of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and was the Regimental Executive Officer during his senior year. Jordan would like to send his love to his girlfriend Jacqueline, also a 2007 Virginia Tech grad, and his family back home. Ut Prosim.
Our Leaders in Action speaker on Thursday was Coach Pete Hughes, Virginia Tech’s baseball coach. Coach Hughes spoke on the five traits he looks for in a leader and he gave a great presentation—good enough that some cadets have already asked about having him back. Afterwards he was joined by a group of cadets at a reception and dinner. The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets honored America’s veterans yesterday with a number of events, including hosting a university ceremony at the War Memorial, a 48 hour vigil at the War Memorial, a 24 hour vigil at The Rock, and a formal retreat ceremony on the Upper Quad.
